Baptism

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Matthew 28:18-20

These words of Jesus place baptism as an integral part of ministry. Martin Luther once wrote, “Baptism is not our work, but God’s work. It is a priceless treasure God gives and faith receives or grasps.” (Large Catechism) Thus baptism is much more than a rite of initiation—it is that gift of God which defines who we are and empowers us to live in his power. Baptism is at the heart and soul of ministry at St. Peter for it is in baptism that God binds himself to you personally and invites you to call him, Father!

It is in baptism that God adopts you as his own child. (Titus 3:5-7) It is his publicly embracing you as part of his family. The Bible speaks so strongly as to say that baptism saves (I Peter 3:21). It saves us by taking all that Jesus earned on the cross and making it ours. (Romans 6:3-4, Galatians 3:26-27)

We believe, teach and confess that baptism is God’s gift offered to you so that you might know that God loves you and offers you new life in Jesus Christ. Since this is an act of God who loves all people, we baptize infants and adults alike. The only difference between the two is that adults can speak for themselves. If you would like to learn more of what the church teaches on baptism or to arrange for a baptism (for self or child) please contact the church office and speak to Pastor.
