Caring Community

The challenge in any organization is not to look at what others are doing but to look inward.  President John Kennedy inspired the nation when he challenged, “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”  A church that does not care is a church that has lost sight of its own identity.  The heart of Jesus is wrapped in caring and compassion.
Caring Community is a simple program designed to help notice and provide a caring hand whenever an individual/family is going through a time of change or loss.  Has anyone ever brought over a meal for you and your family?  Didn’t it feel good to know that someone cared?  Wasn’t it nice the time you got an encouraging card in the mail?
Caring Community is about people reaching out to touch someone in need.  The problem is that because the congregation make up is different from that of 30 years ago, many members go through major events in their lives that we in the church don’t react to because we never find out about it.
Caring Community seeks to create lines of communication that would encourage you to call the appropriate elder if someone you know is experiencing one of those events where a touch might just be the thing they need.  The elder would then call one of the several volunteer care providers under him to give the appropriate touch.  It might be a meal, a brief visit, a card or just a call.  But that might be just the thing needed to remind them that they are part of a Caring Community.
Caring Community does not seek to pry – just encourage and let someone know they are not forgotten and certainly not alone.  Caring community allows us to give hands and feet to ministry.  And the cost is just a little of your time and that you keep your eyes and ears open to things like:
Birth in the family   Special birthday  Death in the family
Loss/change of job   Hospitalization of individual or family member Extended illness
Divorce/separation Engagement/marriage
We want to create an environment where each member of St. Peter can experience the beauty and wonder of a Caring Community!  Jesus died so that we might be in community with God and one another.  Let’s make the effort to make that community a reality!  The elders have taken a responsibility for the members of St. Peter alphabetically.  All you have to do is call the elder responsible for that person’s part of the alphabet when you see someone in need.
