In the Lutheran Church, Jr. High Discipleship is almost synonymous with confirmation. More and more we realize that "one size fits all" doesn't work. Therefore, we need to offer a variety of ways to assist families in creating a firm foundation built on Jesus Christ. Since an oasis is a place in the desert where a weary traveler can find water, we have chosen the name OASIS for our Wednesday night program. The five letters in OASIS represent "Our Adolescents Staying in Scripture." This will be the same program we have used for the past few years--but in a new package leading to confirmation and it is based on significant relationships built between adults and youth. We believe this confirmation program is an important step in a life-long process of discipleship. It is geared to teach the head, heart, and hands of today's 7th and 8th graders.

By calling the Wednesday night program by "OASIS" rather than "confirmation" we communicate that there is more than one path for students leading toward confirmation. Who knows, maybe our jr. high members may have friends who want to be part of it without any thought of joining our church. Wouldn't that be a great blessing to help bring other youth closer to our savior Jesus?
